This is the plate that attaches to the back of a 1275 engine which allows the starter and transmission to mount to the engine.

NOTE: A 1275 engine back plate and a 948 engine back plate are not the same! The 1275 back plate is thicker than a 948 backing plate.

NOTE 2:  If you need a new back plate, you will also need a new back plate gasket and possible a lower dowel pin.
